A powerhouse gospel singing diva, Etha Mae
Herring is her name. I often talk about the
twins, Etha Mae and Utha Mae Hewett. These
two little ladies would play and sing to the
glory of God. Etha Mae touched so many people
through singing. The Lord called Etha from
labor to reward on February 1, 2001.
I am from the ole school and love those old
songs the twins would sing. Songs like, "In
The Garden", "Can't Nobody Do Me
Like Jesus", "Somehow Somewhere I
Got To Make This Journey With My Jesus Somehow", "Glad
I Got In The Army In Due Time", "You
Don't Know How Blessed You Are", "Traveling
Life's Highway", "God Is Able" and "Caught
Up To Meet Him In The Air." Etha Mae was
the epitome of praise and worship with a song.
Maybe somewhere on the earth there's a gospel
singing diva who ministers with such gladness
as the late Etha Mae Herring did. But rest
assured that I have not heard her yet. One
of the greatest "angelic voices," unlike
other gospel singers, she would sing so powerfully
all the time. What made this lady so special
was the rich quality and sheer strength of
her voice, and the urgency of her delivery.
To her, the message of Jesus Christ was the
most important aspect of her art and she knew
how to bring it home. She was blessed with
a gift to make a difference.
I talk about the twins all the time as I
minister because their "outreach musical
ministry" sustained me back in the day.
Mrs. Utha Mae Hewett is still playing and singing
for the Lord. So many times, Etha would start
singing, Utha would sing some of the song and
then Etha would come back in as leader to end
the song. I can remember as they were singing
people saying, "Sing your song Mae", "Go
'head Utha", "Let Him use you",
and "Sing about Him, He's alright".
The last song I heard Etha sing was, "One
Day I Am Going Where Jesus Is. I'll Be Caught
Up To Meet Him In The Air".
Has anyone here seen my ole friend Etha Mae?
Can you tell me where has she gone? The Bible
tells me she was "caught up to meet Him.".
Now you know who she was, my heart. I don't
know when I will stop talking about her! Gospel
music heals the heart that words can not. Not
one day goes by that I don't listen to the
tape of the twins. Priscilla and Tora step
into your mother's shoes and sing because you
both are gifted like she was. AMEN AMEN AMEN
